Handicapping is an acquired skill that anyone can be good at as long as they work hard to be good at. Horse betting handicapping skills are attainable so all you have to do is know the sport you are getting yourself involved with. Don’t forget that in order to be good at the sport that you are putting your money on, you need to know essential information about it.
Let’s begin with knowing horse racing and horse betting.

Follow the Tiers
This is the most important concept when reading my handicapping picks. The horses are grouped into color coded tiers. The tier colors are displayed as the background color of each horse's program number. The colors range from dark green to yellow.

The gray tier is a special tier which means that the particular horse is not rated, although it could be listed at the bottom it does not mean that the horse is bad one. It is quite rare to have an unrated horse. One must examine these horses in this tier with keen eyes in order to see if they are a threat.
Within a given tier, the horses are ranked from best to worst. However, usually the horses within a tier are close in ability and it is difficult to choose one over another.

Handpick the Races
It is only common sense to handpick the races you choose to bet on. Your horse betting career won’t be very successful if you chose to bet every possible race. A good advice from the pros is to avoid races with one or more horses in the gray tier and choose for races with small top tiers like one or two horses in the tier.

Handpicking races will also conserve your bankroll but you should always be prepared to invest money in order to make a proper bet when you find a race you like. . If you cannot afford to outlay enough funds for the more exotic bets, stick to simpler bets such as Win/Place/Show, Exactas/Quinellas and Doubles.

Know the Horse’s Workout
Performances of a horse would indicate a horse’s capabilities. Recent workouts would indicate the horse’s current form. When choosing between two horses with similar past ability, the horse in the best current form will often prevail. Let’s analyze quality workouts of these horses.
Workouts that are highlighted in the shade of red are quality workouts.

Keep on researching about the horse you are thinking to put your money on to know clearly if it’s a good bet.
