There was an interview in the LA Times a few years back with renowned folklorist Alan Dundes which ventures to explain why Superbowl Sunday has become the focus of a number of “urban beliefs” in the United States. These beliefs are as follows:

Each year on the date of Superbowl Sunday, the water systems of big cities all across the country verge on collapsing because of so many simultaneous toilet flushing at half-time.

There are more women who are physically abused by spouses and boyfriends on Superbowl Sunday than on any other day of the year.

Two-thirds of all the avocados sold yearly in the United States are purchased during the three weeks prior to the Super Bowl for making guacamole dip.

The deliveries of pizza are the highest during this day than any other day of the year.

Disneyland becomes a veritable ghost town on the day of the Super Bowl Sunday since most Americans are nailed to couches in front of the TV sets.

The stock market predictably fluctuates up or down the next day after the Super Bowl depending on which league wins.

Dundes goes on to explain “Every culture’s legends express that culture’s values. Super Bowl legends usually involve numbers and a sense of enormity. The idea of big numbers, of being bigger than other people, is very American." The Superbowl beliefs aren’t entirely without foundation and perhaps we are prone to exaggerate.

Debunking the myths: Water Sewage Collapsing? Back in the 1980s in Salt Lake City, the water main did burst open right in the middle of a Super Bowl broadcast. The news story that time attribute the mishap to an excess of toilet flushing there was no evidence to prove it or even the likelihood of the event.

Spousal Abuse Soars? This remains very controversial and the evidence to support it was anecdotal and has no strong basis.

Increase in Avocado Sales? It is indeed that this event accounts for the largest share of avocado sales annually with 69.6 million pounds projected for last year’s Big Game but not the major event. But alas, Cinco de Mayo ranks first in holiday avocado sales in the US.

Highest Number of Pizzas Delivered On Superbowl Sunday 2008, Domino’s alone projected home deliveries were more than 1.2 million pizzas.

Disneyland a Ghost Town? Net really, though the people who go to Disneyland on this day are slow and are low but not low enough to be considered as a ghost town.

Stock Market Indicator? Explained Forbes “The theory holds that when a team from the original National Football League wins the championship, stocks rise,” explains Forbes writer John Dubosz. “When a team from the now-defunct American Football League wins, that’s bearish.” The so-called Super Bowl Indicator has an astonishing 85% success rate – not that I’d recommend stalking your portfolio on it.
